Common personal care chemicals
Triclosan- an antibacterial agent found in some toothpastes and soaps.
Fragrance- is found in deodorant, face washes, shampoos, body washes and suncreams.
Toluene- is common solvent used in paint thinners, and moisturizing creams and nail polishes.
Parabens-mimic estrogen and are likely endocrine disruptor. use to preserve and scent many product.
Formaldehyde releasers- They are toxic, are a class of antimicrobalpreservatives.
Oxybenzone- used in over half of sun creams as a UV light absorber.
How do the chemicals enter the body?
We can breathe them
We can swallow them unintentionally by getting them on your lips.
We can absorb them through the skin and mucous membranes.
What does the government say?
Cosmetics companies can use any ingredient or raw material they want in their products, without government review or approval.
Timing matters
This reflects our growing understanding that exposure to many pollutants, including those from personal care products, is riskier during fetal development and in early childhood, when it can disturb the growing brain and nervous system, setting the stage for problems in childhood and later life.
This isn’t to say that these chemicals are perfectly safe for adults just say may be the most damaging for developing fetus and young child.
